How does it work?

As a primary antioxidant, SOD acts differently compared to well-known secondary antioxidants such as Vitamin E, C and Polyphenols. SOD is an enzyme that stays intact at the end of the dismutation reaction and is ready to be involved in another free radical dismutation, this specificity makes SOD a unique and long-lasting antioxidant. 

The production of free radicals is a cascade reaction starting with O2 molecules being transformed into the most reactive molecule O2-, which leads to the synthesis of numerous secondary radicals (ROO.). Most antioxidants only serve to quench the ROO. Molecules but do not control the production of the precursor species. SOD can neutralize the most reactive oxygen species O2-. Moreover, SOD is also able to trigger the body to produce more endogenous antioxidants. 

Since SOD is an enzyme, wouldn’t it get digested?

SOD B Extramel® is microencapsulated in order to provide an enteric-coating protection to prevent its degradation during the digestive process. The patented C3 microencapsulation technology enables SOD B Extramel®  to reach the intestinal tract with the guaranteed highest SOD activity. Once in the intestinal tract, SOD B Extramel®  is released from the coating to provide its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
