How does it work?

Safranal is a monoterpene aldehyde volatile compound responsible for the characteristic saffron aroma and is one of the main compounds involved in saffron benefits on mood and PMS symptoms. Safranal helps regulate cortisol levels, a key hormone involved in mood and behaviour. Increased cortisol secretion causes the neurotransmitter serotonin to become less sensitive to activation, this dysregulation of the serotonergic system in turn causes mood swing, PMS symptoms, disrupted thermoregulation, decreased gut motility and poor sleep quality. 

Other metabolites of Safron such as Crocins are also involved in balancing the ratio between serotonin and dopamine, which helps maintain emotional balance.

Quality Saffron extracts are extracted only from fresh saffron stigmas. Most of the metabolites and actives of Saffron extract are sensitive. Safranal is volatile and crocins are thermosensitives and normal extraction methods are unable to preserve an optimal concentration of these metabolites. Common extraction methods also often overlook secondary derivative compounds such as kaempferol and crocetins which have synergistic roles that compliments the effects of Safranal.
